The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to the World Food Programme for its efforts to fight hunger, for its contributions to improving peace in war-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in the fight against hunger, efforts to prevent hunger as a weapon wars and conflicts.

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian organization promoting food security. In 2019, the organization assisted nearly 100 million people in 88 countries who were victims of food insecurity and hunger.

In 2015, ending hunger was recognized as one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The World Food Programme is the main UN instrument to achieve this goal. The problem of hunger is still acute. In 2019, 135 million people suffered from hunger, the highest rate in many years. Most of the growth in needy has been driven by war and economic reasons, but food loss and waste also take away up to a third of all countries' annual production. The coronavirus pandemic has contributed to the exacerbation of world hunger due to closed borders, disruption to supply chains and a crisis in the economies of many countries.
